- February 5: Sailing Program registration opens (Jr. Sailing Members, if application completed by Dec. 31)

Summer Sailing Programs
Summer sailing programs at CYC offer something for everyone! Ages 5 to 21 are welcome to join us in learning to sail, having fun in the water, conducting sailing-related STEM experiments, and so much more. Our programs promote a lifelong love of sailing, all types of sailing (racing and non-racing), water safety, respect for the natural environment, a skill development path for every participant, and experiences that build confidence and friendships.
One-Week Classes
- Sea Squirts (ages 5–6): designed for our youngest sailors to ignite their passion for CYC, water safety, and confidence in boats.
- Sound Sharks (ages 7–8): more on-the-water time developing sailing skills, plus fun on and off the water.
- Cruise Control (ages 9–13): for ‘cruising’ sailors interested in fun and adventure — Sunfish, 420, or Opti cube, prior experience or none.
- Race Teams Coach Clinic: a high-level guest coach specializing in 420s and/or Optis provides feedback and shares their passion.
Two-Week Classes
- Beginner Opti (ages 9–12): full-day course for sailors new to sailing looking to start their racing path.
- Opti Green (ages 10–13): full-day course for experienced sailors who’d like to race or join the Opti Race Team.
- Middle School / High School 420: full-day course for middle and high school sailors with minimum experience or interested in high school sailing.
Summer Race Teams
Requires a full-summer (June–August) or half-summer (June–July or July–August) commitment.
- Opti Green: experienced sailors ages 10–13 who want to race or are interested in the Opti Race Team.
- Opti, Laser, 420 Race Teams: for sailors ready to compete in a more competitive environment; practices all summer and attends regional regattas.
Non-Member Opportunity: Sea Squirts (Ages 5–6)
Open to ages 5–6 who know a member of the club; space is limited and not guaranteed. Interested families must apply by April 15. Families will be contacted directly regarding enrollment. For children 7 and older, contact programdirector@carolinayachtclub.org for alternative options.
Sailing Camp + Race Team Checklist
Bring every day: life jacket, refillable water bottle, closed-toed shoes, breathable sun-protective clothing that can get wet, hat and sunglasses, sunscreen (applied before arrival), dry towel, dry change of clothes, healthy snack, and lunch for all-day classes. Not permitted: sandals/flip-flops, ill-fitting swimwear, muscle shirts.
Families must complete our codes of conduct and health waivers to participate.
Cancellation / Refund Policy
- No refund if a sailor cancels 14 days or less from the program start date.
- No refund for no-shows.
- No refunds due to inclement weather.
